Discover the crus

  • 12 hectares between 700m and 800m altitude, some 100-year old bush-vines, some new plantings which have been self-propagated from the old ones . The soil is a younger layer of volcanic rock approximately 2,500 years old on Giuseppe's area . San Lorenzo makes very fine perfumed floral wines with cherry/balsamic notes and firm tannins.

  • The soil here is easily recognisable as it is by far the rockiest of all the Crus . The ground is covered by small light black volcanic pumice rocks and is some of the oldest and 'purest ' as well as poorest soils on Etna. This is very rare and only appears in two of all the Crus, Calderara Sottana and partially San Lorenzo.

  • A large cru in the appellation, at around 650m, but Giuseppe has a very special parcel less than than 1 ha in size, with 100+-year-old bush vines. Dark, mature, profound fruit, balsamic notes, and velvety tannins as the wine ages.

One of the grand crus on Mt Etna.

  • District Sollicchiata , in Castiglione di Sicilia, an area which was very famous in the past but was abandoned years ago due to the low yields even though the quality was very good. Statella bought back old family vineyards to revive this region. Some vines are pre phylloxera, some are young replanted vines. At the moment this is a 1.8-hectare parcel producing excellent fruit.

  • Monte Ilice, a separate crater on the southeast side of Etna at 800m altitude. Pre -phylloxera vines of Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio, this site is a sanctuary of biodiversity and produces deeply perfumed rich Etna Wines .

  • Since 2005, Giuseppe Russo has been organically farming his family's old vineyards, where many of the vines are around 100 years of age, and he is restoring the old cellar under his house. He has 15 hectares of vines on the Northern side of Etna around the town of Passopisciaro - considered the best part of the volcano for viticulture - and still sells off fruit from the youngest vines. He was part of the early wave of producers recognising the potential of the region, the indigenous varieties and traditional wines, and today makes some of the greatest wines on Mt Etna.

  • Calogero Statella has been the oenologist of Tenuta delle Terre Nere since 2008. In 2016 he re- purchased, together with his wife Rita, a vineyard on Mount Etna located in the Pettinociarelle district (Sollicchiata, commune of Castiglione di Sicilia). Pettinociarelle is a district that was very famous in the past for wine, as the soils (that are poor) gave a low grape yield, but the wines from these grapes were of very high quality. Nowadays the vineyard of Calogero and Rita is one of the few vineyards that are still productive. The grapes are vinified at the cellar of Tenuta delle Terre Nere. Calogero tells us: “ The Etna: a land where we were both born. In this unique area for viticulture, the traditional artisanal approach to winemaking is the only way to express the environment”.

  • Sonia Spadaro Mulone, is the owner of this artisan estate and inherited the original vineyards of Don Alfio, an almost legendary man on Mt Etna. Her vineyards are very old and managed in the most natural way to preserve biodiversity. Enzo Cali is a young oenologist helping Sonia to make some of the finest wines on Etna.
